Ringing in the New Year with Children in Salt Lake City

New Years Eve can be a really exciting event for children. Saying goodbye to an old year and ringing in a new year can seem almost magical. And, why not celebrate that transition? Children love parties, but sometimes it can be hard to adjust to New Year’s Eve pre-kids and New Year’s Eve post-kids. It simply requires a little bit of creativity and flexibility. You may not be dancing the night away anymore, but there is even more fun when you are together with your family and loved ones. Here are a few ideas for how to celebrate New Year’s Eve with children in style this year in Salt Lake City.

Visit the Hogle Zoo Lights

Why not try ringing in the new year by taking a walk through a 135 foot tunnel while wearing hologram glasses? Admire the holiday lights on display. See the nocturnal animals in action, the ones you don’t normally get to see during the day. Ride the Conservation Carousel into the new year.

Snowbird Ski Resort – Little Cottonwood Canyon

Just near Lake City is the Snowbird Ski resort. There are many great family-centered activities to ring in the new year. Stand around a large bonfire drinking hot cocoa. Watch in wonder and amazement as skiers come down the mountain carrying lights for the torchlight parade. Take the whole family to the ballroom, and dance until the littlest members start to droop.

Ballet West Nutcracker at the Capitol Theater

Follow the story of Clara, the evil mouse king, and the nutcracker beloved by all ages in a beautiful ballet production. Your children will be enchanted by the stories of sugar plum fairies and magical kingdoms full of dancing dolls. Set in a historic beautiful Salt Lake city building, as old as the Nutcracker story itself! What a magical way of ringing in the new year!

Visit The Grand America Hotel

The Grand America hotel is always fun to see with its holiday lights, fabulously decorated Christmas trees, and beautiful window displays. Check out the life-size gingerbread house in the interior of the hotel made by a local pastry chef. Stay for New Year’s Eve Breakfast and Lunch Buffet, or enjoy a New Year’s Eve Prix Fixe dinner. If you’re too tired to make breakfast next morning, enjoy their New Year’s Day Breakfast Buffet.

Stay Cozy at Home With The Family

Dress up or wear pajamas. Watch movies. Drink kiddie champagne (a.k.a. apple cider) or hot cocoa. Eat popcorn and other great snacks. Take lots of fun and silly pictures. Turn on the music and dance. Bring out the noisemakers. Make resolutions for the new year. Look back on the old year. Sing Auld Lang Syne. Look forward to another year with your loved ones.

There are so many different ways to enjoy New Year’s Eve with your children. You can visit the zoo, see night-time animals in action, and wear holographic glasses while enjoying the many holiday lights. Or make it a family tradition to support the local arts scene by catching a show of The Nutcracker, one of the most famous works of Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Travel to the Snowboard Ski Resort just outside of Salt Lake City and enjoy a large bonfire, hot cocoa, a downward-sloping Torchlight Parade, and a ballroom dance. Enjoy the comfort of strolling around the Grand America Hotel. Stroll around their lobby to see their window displays, holiday lights, and life-size gingerbread house. Or simply enjoy the sweet pleasures of home with your children nearby. Dance, dress-up (or down), put on music, make noise, play games, talk, sing, eat, drink, make merry and be sure to take lots of silly pictures.

Whatever you do, enjoy the little moments, get creative, have lots of fun saying goodbye to the old year and have hope in the many good things to come next year with your family.
