Ringing in the New Year is full of celebrations and spending time with loved ones. It is a refreshing feeling knowing that the previous year has ended, and a new year is beginning. A new year also means an opportunity for a fresh start…a new years resolution! It’s a great time to evaluate your goals and ambitions for the year and make some positive changes in your life. To help get your started on your new year resolutions, here are some helpful top ways to really start the new year off right.
New Years Resolution: Eat Right
Start making a conscious effort to eat better. Most importantly, try to eat at least three times a day, and don’t skip breakfast! A balanced breakfast helps to speed overall metabolism and gives you the energy to jumpstart your day. Cut out excessive sweets and fast food. Although both can be tempting, there are ways to avoid both. Have a sweet tooth? Try buying sweet fruits from the grocery store, such as strawberries and raspberries. Eating a small portion of fruit when that sweet craving hits will satisfy your craving and it is actually good for you.
Fast food is usually oily and full of saturated fats. If you opt for fast food because it’s quick, try purchasing easy to make food from the grocery store. A one pot chicken and veggies is the perfect solution – throw your ingredients together in one pot, toss it in the oven, and 20 minutes later you have the perfect meal. Eating better will improve your health, overall mood, and happiness!
New Years Resolution: Think Positive
We all have those days where everything seems to be going wrong. This new year, try to think positive and working on a healthy mindset. It’s easier said than done, and definitely takes a little bit of practice to master. One way to de-stress and get rid of negative thoughts is through mediation. An easy way to meditate is to find a guided meditation video online. A mere 5 minutes of meditation can drastically improve mood and decrease anxiety.
You can also try to commit to reading more books this new year. Try to trade in one night of television with an hour of reading. Reading is also a great stress reliever and is good for your mental health. Taking walks or runs is also a good way to clear negative thoughts and increase endorphins. A morning hike on your favorite trail or just a quick run around your neighborhood can have life changing effects.
New Years Resolution: Healthier Lifestyle
Getting fit is a common resolution for the new year, but often times doesn’t last throughout the year. The key to making a healthy lifestyle a reality is commitment. First, get a gym membership right away if you don’t have one already, find a great hiking trail nearby, or get some home exercise equipment. I personally have an indoor exercise bike. Next, find a workout buddy. Having a friend or coworker to workout with will help you stay motivated. It also helps to make a workout schedule. Plan your workouts each day to give yourself time and obligation to exercise. Try an hour in the early morning before work or during your lunch break.
Committing to a healthier lifestyle doesn’t stop at the gym! Make sure to start getting 8 hours of sleep a day. We often forget how important a good night’s sleep is for our body’s health. Lastly, drink more water this new year. Aim for at least a half-gallon of water per day. Drinking more water helps with weight loss, improves overall mood, flushes out toxins, makes your skin glow, and helps you stay alert and awake all day!
A new year is the perfect time to set your goals for the year and make healthier choices for your lifestyle. Think about what you want to improve in your life, make an achievable plan to make it happen, and commit to it!
